President Trong chairs meeting on key personnel for next party term

President Nguyen Phu Trong appears healthy after falling ill in mid-April.

Secretary General of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and President Nguyen Phu Trong on June 21 presided over a meeting with members of the Politburo, the country’s most powerful body, to discuss planning on key personnel in the coming term, local media has reported.

The president appears in a good mood among high-ranking officials including Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Executive Secretary Tran Quoc Vuong, Head of the Central Commission for Organization Pham Minh Chinh, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh and Head of Mass Mobilization Commission Truong Thi Mai.

The last time Mr. Trong was seen in public was more than one month ago.

The meeting is aimed to approve the planning on personnel for the Party Central Committee’s 13th term in 2021-2026, review the personnel plans, and decide the punishment of corrupt senior officials.

Regarding the personnel for the next term, those selected for high-ranking positions would be trained for the time prior to 2021.

Earlier this month, local media quoted President Nguyen Phu Trong as saying that the Party and State are determined to remove from the personnel planning those thirsty for power and exchanging money for promotion, blamed for corruption and his/her spouses and children having bad living style.

In another move, on June 19, a 600-page book about the president was made public.
