Joining FTAs, Vietnam strengthens intellectual property protection

The Ministry of Science and Technology is working on amendments to the Law on Intellectual Property to integrate international commitments into the national legal system.

Vietnam will transpose intellectual property commitments into national law when it joins free trade agreements (FTAs), VnExpress quoted Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Pham Cong Tac as saying at a meeting on August 25.

Mr. Tac said that the Ministry of Science and Technology is working on amendments to the Law on Intellectual Property to integrate international commitments into the national legal system and ensure the interests of the country and enterprises.

"The amendment of a number of articles is aimed at honoring international commitments, avoiding conflicts and achieving the highest benefits for the country and enterprises," the deputy minister emphasized.

For his part, Mr. Dinh Huu Phi, director of the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam under the Ministry of Science and Technology, said that there are seven major groups of policies that need to be modified. The office expects to amend 44 out of 222 articles in the Law on Intellectual Property.

The legal modifications are in line with the institutionalization of the Party’s viewpoint and orientations and the government’s resolution in the new context, with the aim of encouraging creativity and inventions, protecting and ensuring the effective utilization of intellectual assets, Mr. Phi added.

He noted that copyright protection in the digital environment is the major issues for the time being. The regulations aim to facilitate the process of registration of rights and ensure international commitments.

It is expected that the revised law will be submitted to the National Assembly for approval by May 2022.
