Hanoi celebrates New Year 2025 with art exhibitions

Art exhibitions are a great way to hang out during Hanoi's New Year celebrations.

The ongoing exhibition entitled "Tet Ty" or "Tet Holiday of the Snake" runs until January 3 at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum featuring 80 works of various genres and materials by the G39 group to mark the arrival of the new year.

This event is held to honor the snake, the mascot of the New Year, and to bid farewell to the previous one. The annual exhibition features the works of 16 artists including Binh Nhi, Vuong Linh, and Le Thiet Cuong.

Works are presented in a variety of media, including oil, gouache, do paper, acrylic, sculpture, Huong Canh pottery, and Bat Trang ceramics.

While some works, such as those by artist Le Thiet Cuong, feature snakes in paintings and sculptures, others depict nature in vibrant, bustling landscapes and human portraits. The exhibition runs until January 3, 2025.

In connection with the Lunar New Year theme of At Ty or Snake, another exhibition, "12 Zodiacs" by artist Dang Viet Linh, will open at the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts on January 7. This series of paintings has been created over 12 years, from the Year of the Snake 2013 to 2025.

Dang Viet Linh said: "Creating the 12 Zodiacs is a way to send my feelings, dreams, and hopes for each new year. Although my inspirations and methods of expression evolve, the core focus remains on the human spirit and the joy of living". The exhibition is on view through January 14.

Also at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, the exhibition "Here & Now" featuring works by the late artist Dong Huy Bien (1972-2021) will run until January 5, 2025. The exhibition presents 30 lacquer works inspired by familiar, everyday themes such as people, daily life, and landscapes. The artist's paintings encapsulate the four seasons, offering a warm, rustic atmosphere through fluid, sentimental strokes. His use of blue creates a clear, almost infinite space that evokes a sense of longing and contemplation.

In honor of the upcoming 100th anniversary of the founding of the Indochina College of Fine Arts, Le Auction House will present the exhibition “20th Century Vietnamese Art” from January 1 to 7, 2025, at 44 Yen Phu, Hanoi. This special exhibition offers a rare opportunity to admire and celebrate the masters of Indochinese painting. Among the notable groups of artists featured are "Pho - Thu - Luu - Dam", "Tri - Lan - Van - Can", "Nghiem - Lien - Sang - Phai" and "Nhan - Hoa - Hau - Kiem". The exhibition also features works by famous painters from the French Indochina, Resistance, and contemporary periods.

French artists played a prominent role in shaping Vietnam's fine arts during the colonial period. Through their work as teachers, explorers, and photographers, they greatly influenced local artistic development. Notable figures such as Victor Tardieu, Joseph Inguimberty, Alix Aymé, André Maire, and Evariste Jonchère are featured alongside works by Henri Mege, allowing art lovers to explore their lasting influence on Vietnamese art.
